A study of hotel controllers in Hong Kongen_US
Facing keen competitions from the other neighbouring countries, the hotel industry in Hong Kong has been operating in a highly dynamic environment. The hotel controller is positioned in the central information network of the hotel. Besides performing general accounting function, the controller is also responsible for other functions such as planning, controlling, reporting and other administration duties. Controllers are also expected by the top management to have greater participation in decision related to business strategy. My study results indicate that the scope of controllership is being widened, controller is not just a staff provider of information, he or she is becoming an integral part of the business decision making process and their extent of involvement in strategic decisions is relatively significant. To be successful, a hotel controller should have at least six years' of hotel working experience, possesses a bachelor degree and good managerial skills. These are some of the important qualifications reflected in my study. In view of the increasing involvement of hotel controller in the strategic decision-making process, the controller is suggested to maintain their reporting duties to the hotel general manager. This helps in maintaining a close relationship with the top management. Besides, controllers should also improve their technical and managerial skills.en_US
