Abstract: | This thesis describes an investigation into the performance of the shoring systems in deep excavation due to the variation of soil parameters and structural elements through finite difference program (FLAC). Under the analysis, the output results were collected and the design charts had been plotted for analyzing different kinds of deep excavation under equal vertical spacing. Guidelines of design charts for the deep excavation had been set to provide a preliminary estimation to the design engineers. To enable this investigation to be carried out, 30 computer models needed to be analyzed through "FLAC" program. The output results included horizontal displacement of sheet pile, surface ground settlement, strut forces, bending moment and shear force along the sheet pile. It was found that, the horizontal displacement of sheet pile, surface ground settlement, total strut load, bending moment and shear force along the sheet pile in the shoring system was strongly affected by the following factors : (1) friction angles, (2) SPT "N" values, (3) dilation angles, (4) sheet pile stiffnessses, (5) horizontal strut stiffnesses, and (6) vertical strut spacings. The most effective way to reduce the horizontal displacement of sheet pile, surface ground settlement, bending moment and shear force along the sheet pile were the increase of vertical strut numbers ( reducing the distance between vertical strut). Apart from these, increasing the excavation depth could also cause a significant change of the shoring system's performances owing to the effect of influence factors (friction angles, N-values, dilation angles, sheet pile stiffnesses, horizontal strut stiffnesses and vertical strut spacings). Finally, in the studies, it was also found that the performances of shoring system for the variation of sheet pile stiffnesses and horizontal strut stiffnesses were quite similar. They may have the same mechanism in the shoring system. Based on the results getting from the computer analysis, some empirical formula have been obtained and the design charts have been plotted for estimating the preliminary performance of the shoring system (steel sheet piling shoring system). They include horizontal displacement of sheet pile, surface ground settlement, total strut load, shear force and bending moment. |
