dcterms.abstract | The use of geotechnical instrumentation is essential to ensure safety and to control construction procedures for most the heavy civil engineering construction projects. During the construction stages, geotechnical monitoring data provides early warning of conditions that may require remedial or precaution measures especially for those projects that the construction activities may cause adverse effects to the adjacent buildings, structures and subsurface utilities. However, managing the huge amount of geotechnical monitoring data is always a great concern for the site staff. In most of the cases, the data analysis and reporting processes are not sufficiently efficient and effective to support engineering decisions. With the aids of Geographical Instrumentation System (GIS) technology, data can be captured and converted into databases to support speeding retrieving and complex analysis in both graphical and non-graphical environments. The rapid development of computer technology provides high speed networking for data transferring from one end to the other within fractions of a second. Relational database management techniques facilitate the integration of scattering geotechnical data into the system in an efficient, consistent and explicit manner. The customized GIS applications help Geotechnical Engineers to obtain, analyze and report on their findings in a timely manner and to provide visual aides to help them and other engineers conceptualize, understand and effectively employ the information provided. In this dissertation, a prototype GIS is developed for a selected West Rail construction site for managing the geotechnical monitoring data. This system provides functions including data input, data processing, data retrieving, graphical analysis and query, report and map output. Phases of system analysis, design, implementation, and operation are discussed in details. Furthermore the system has been evaluated intensively in order to provide a basis for similar construction projects to justify the acquisition of GIS technology in handling geotechnical monitoring data. | en_US |
