Abstract: Knowledge Management is an interdisciplinary business model dealing with all aspects of knowledge within the context of the organization, including knowledge creation, codification, sharing, and how these activities promote learning, innovation and forge competitive advantage. In practice, KM encompasses both technological tools and organizational routines in overlapping parts. Knowledge Management has been widely used in higher education institutions to improve their knowledge assets in order to innovate and respond to a changing society. However, with the internationalization of higher education, lots of transnational and trans-regional education practices have become popular and running branch campus abroad is one of the typical forms. However, running an overseas branch campus in another country's context could never be an easy job. The article presents the initial findings of a case study conducted at Xi'an Jiao tong -Liverpool University (XJTLU), an international university within China, with Xi'an Jiao Tong University and University of Liverpool as its two parental universities. The case study is to investigate and understand Knowledge Management practices and perceptions within Sino-foreign Joint Higher Education Institutions, and mainly focus on how to apply KM to help such institutions to incorporate strengths of different higher education systems in a desired way, and meanwhile to avoid expected conflicts caused by different cultures, different educational systems and practices, and therefore to make Sino-foreign Joint Higher Education Institution like XJTLU be unique and grow strong in both China and worldwide.
