dc.title | A study of the computer Year 2000 problem in the Kowloon Hotel | en_US |
dcterms.abstract | Faced with guest demand and a heightened competitive environment, information technology (IT) has been increasingly applied to day to day hotel operations in order to improve operational efficiency and cost effectiveness. With sophisticated hotel information systems, the property management systems and guest accounting systems, relying heavily on time-related microchips, the Year 2000 (Y2K) problem presents not just a problem in the IT industry but also in the hotel industry. From a technical viewpoint, the Y2K problem will have an enormous impact on business application, package solutions and system software. Even more seriously, from a business point of view, there could be a potential failure or malfunction in the operational and financial computer systems which could severely affect operations and hotel guests satisfaction. The objectives of this research study are i) to analyse IT applications in The Kowloon Hotel; ii) to scrutinise the potential impact of the Y2K on various departments of The Kowloon Hotel; iii) to examine the possible solutions to deal with the Y2K issue and third parties involved which may affect The Kowloon Hotel; iv) to analyse the knowledge and awareness of the Y2K problem of various department heads and their staff and v) to raise the Y2K awareness and potential impact for the top managers of other Hong Kong hotels. Hoteliers always concerned about service quality and guest satisfaction, however, a successful business framework should consist of IT trends and IT application and data. Further expanding the existing business success model, a technology contingency plan should be incorporated in the model so that hoteliers can be prepared to react for any future computer crisis in order to maintain guest service at all times. | en_US |
