| dcterms.abstract | Background: To provide quality care to people with severe intellectual disability in residential setting, service providers have to work closely with the family of their residents. In spite of the importance of the family to the lives of people with intellectual disability and the vast number of service users in the residential setting, there are limited local studies on the parents' experience after the placement of their children. As a result, their feelings, difficulties, opinions and so forth are unknown and hidden. Aim: The study aims at describing parents' experiences before and after the placement of their adult children with severe intellectual disability into residential setting. Method: A descriptive qualitative approach was adopted to provide a comprehensive summary of parents' experience in everyday terms. Five subjects were recruited by purposive sampling and individual in-depth interviews were conducted. The data collected was transcribed verbatim and analyzed using qualitative content analysis. Results: Four themes have been identified: (I) residential service as a hope to ease the caring burden of the family, especially the main carer, (II) initial stage of placement being marked by a busy period for parents to observe and prepare, (III) prolonged engagement in hostel's activities as a means to continue the role as parent, and (IV) parents group as a strong source of support Conclusions: Based on the results of the study, common characteristics of parents who have succeeded in adjusting to the placement of their adult children are found. Their experiences before and after placement are documented which may increase residential staff's understanding of parents who have just placed their adult children into their care. Recommendations on future studies and limitation of the current study are discussed. | en_US |
