| dcterms.abstract | Creation of an abdominal stoma is a traumatic event and the management of a stoma can be an overwhelming experience. An exploratory study was conducted to explore the impact of stomas on quality of life of Hong Kong Chinese people. The relationships among quality of life, social support and various demographic variables of people with stomas were also investigated. People with first diagnosis of colorectal cancer without metastasis and experiencing the surgical creation of bowel stomas were recruited from the Stoma Care Clinic at Kwong Wah Hospital and the Hong Kong Stoma Association. Data was collected through structured interview, which was guided by a 38-item questionnaire based on Modified version of Padilla & Grant Quality of Life Index and the Inventory of Socially Supportive Behaviours (ISSB). Fifty respondents including 27 men and 23 women participated in this study. Result from data analyses indicated that psychological well-being consistently had the lowest quality of life score as compared to other dimensions. On the other hand, emotional support was significantly associated with quality of life in relation of psychological and physical well-being. Respondents with more emotional support had better quality of life, especially in psychological well-being and physical well-being. Informational support was perceived as helpful when provided by health care profession, namely enterostomal therapist, whereas emotional support and tangible support were perceived as helpful when provided by spouse/ family members. The result indicated that both physical and psychological aspects of care were important for people with stomas and both aspects should be included in the nursing care plan for people going to have stoma surgery. Furthermore, information and emotional support should be given to patients as well as their spouse/ family members. In addition, enterostomal therapist had a significant role on patients' rehabilitation. | en_US |
