Abstract: This thesis is to investigate the attitudes of the contractors towards implementation of environmental management system (EMS) which is believed to be the most important factor to determine how successful of their implementation. The content includes the review on the environmental management system and therefore can serve as a guidance note and reference for contractors in developing their environmental management system. A research on the attitudes of contractors towards implementation of environmental management system is also carried out. The data is collected by sending and collecting of questionnaires and selected interview. The data is analyzed to show the result. The present situation is described to give a picture for those engaged in construction industry including the contractors, architects, engineers, developers and government in considering their strategy in protecting the environment. At last, recommendation is given to the local contractors for them to implement environmental protection in a more efficient way and simultaneously acquire benefits to their business. From the findings in this thesis, the local contractors are proactive in protecting the environment and are positioned in the immature and semi mature stages in implementing environmental management system. Although their attitudes are proactive in protecting the environment, they do not fully realize the concepts of sustained development by implementation of EMS.
