dcterms.abstractIn the world of hydrography and navigation, new technology is rapidly being used for navigational purposes, the main components being GIS and GPS. The maritime GIS system under development is called ECDIS - Electronic Chart Display and Information System. ECDIS, a computer with software for displaying the Electronic Navigation Chart (ENC), is a real-time GIS capable of integrating electronic position fixing systems (e.g. GPS/DGPS), depth-sounder, gyrocompass, and radar information into one display. The Hong Kong Hydrographic Office is responsible for providing digital bathymetric data and supplying ENC for ECDIS development under its control. The ECDIS under development provides up to date navigational information, however, it does not provide time varying Marine Information Objects (MIO). The objective of this project is to suggest an implementation strategy for the integration of MIO into Hong Kong's charting system within the ECDIS framework. The framework includes MIO overlays, data standards and specifications, and data display. The methodology of this project is to review all of the MIO which is recommended by the International Hydrographic Organization (IHO), and evaluate these MIO from a variety of sources within the ECDIS framework. From the review and evaluation, suggest the MIO which are appropriate for implementation, and how this should be done. The IHO suggests ten MIO to be incorporated into ECDIS. Among the ten MIO, seven of them are found appropriate for implementation. Due to the complexity and uncertainties, the MIO 'Underkeel Clearance', 'Identified and Unidentified Objects' and 'Vessel Dynamics' are not appropriate for implementation. The integration of MIO into the Hong Kong's charting system requires the set up of an infrastructure of hardware and software for MIO information acquisition and a Marine Information System (MIS). This project shows that the suggested approach to integrate MIO into Hong Kong's charting system is feasible within the ECDIS framework, using different layers to present MIO, using standards and specifications from IHO and suggested sources, and displaying MIO dynamically in two or three dimension. The integration of the seven MIO requires the set up of an infrastructure of hardware and software and a MIS.en_US
