| Abstract: | With the blooming of the Internet technologies and the related applications such as the WWW, the demand for distributing applications over the Internet has become keen. However, most of today's web-based services are either designed to work at a single location or use distributed system technology based on message passing. These systems may suffer from problems such as poor availability, large network traffic overhead, and long latency, given that the clients are geographically far away from the servers or failure occurred at a single point. In this project, we investigate a mobile agent based approach to replicating servers over different locations. A prototype of a web-based E-commerce application system that is physically spanned over multiple locations is developed. A hybrid approach to the system architecture design is proposed so that solutions to technical problems such as reducing communication latency and maintaining data consistencies among different sites are easier to develop. Aglets, the mobile agent system is developed by IBM, is used to coordinate the transactions as well as to balance workloads among the sites. The proposed mobile agent based system was then compared to conventional message passing based web services for performance evaluation. Results of the evaluation over performance measures such as response time and network load are reported. It is found that in general the proposed system outperforms the traditional approach in several ways. |
