Subjective wellbeing measurement of adolescents using the personal wellbeing indexen_US
The Personal Wellbeing Index is a measure of subjective wellbeing (SWB). Preliminary findings showed that the parallel form of this index designed for use with school-age children (PWI-SC) showed satisfactory reliability, validity and sensitivity with primary and secondary school children in Hong Kong. Preliminary findings suggested that adolescents may be capable to use the adult version of the PWI in measuring their SWB. However, which version of the PWI (school-age or adult versions) is more suitable for adolescents have not been investigated. The purpose of this study was to investigate whether the school-age version of the Personal Wellbeing Index (PWI-SC) is a more appropriate measure of SWB than the adult version (PWI-A) with adolescents in Hong Kong. To achieve this, 130 participants who were aged between 12 to 17 were recruited from two secondary schools in Hong Kong using convenient sampling. They included representatives who were studying in forms one to six. A group survey format was employed which required the participants to self-complete a questionnaire containing both the PWI-SC and PWI-A items and other personal particulars. The results indicated that the overall psychometric performances of the two PWI versions were good and also comparable to earlier findings identified with adolescent and adult samples using the PWI. However, there was significant difference in the SWB mean score between the two PWI versions in the current study. The estimated cut-off age for using adult version of PWI instead of school-age version was aged 16 or above. In conclusion, this study has found that the Chinese-translated PWI-SC to be a reliable, valid and sensitive SWB measuring instrument and is a more appropriate version to be used with adolescents under aged 16 years as a SWB measure.en_US
