Abstract: The impulse test technique has long been used for transformer fault finding but there are some drawbacks of this technique. This dissertation aims to develop a transformer fault finding technique in a different approach. The voltage response of two faulty transformers when subjected to steep front impulse has been observed and analyzed. The fault of the transformer is simulated by connecting a resistor between winding and earth. Different fault locations and fault resistance of the transformers have been simulated and tested. A voltage response data base is built. Based on a RLC ladder network model of the transformer, a fault simulation program has been developed. The transformer's r, l and c parameters are estimated and simulation are performed based on these parameters. Good agreement between experimental and simulation results shows that the transformer model is well adapted to simulate different fault condition under impulse testing. By accompanying the simulation and experimental results, a transformer fault finding technique is proposed.
