dcterms.abstractEnergy management studies on an educational institution, an University located in Hung Hom, were carried out to audit the energy consumption of major building services (B.S.) systems and to identify potential areas for energy saving. Billing records and annual energy consumption of each system were analyzed. Energy Management Opportunities (EMOs) were then identified for further evaluation in terms of potential savings and capital investment required. The major EMOs, prioritised based on the payback period and ease of implementation, contributing to energy savings were identified as follows: - Delay starting and early shut off of chiller plants - Reset chilled water supply temperature - Addition of Central Control and Monitoring System - Modification of the chilled water system from constant flow to variable flow system at Phase 3B and 4A/IC - Addition of motion detectors to switch off/reset energy consuming equipment at general teaching rooms and small offices - Addition of occupancy sensors to lecture theatres - Removal of unnecessary lightings at public corridors - Replacement of conventional ballasts by electronic ballasts at public corridors - Replacement of prismatic type light fittings by open louvre type at Library Result shows that achievable annual energy cost saving is $4.3 million, which is equivalent to approximately 12% of the annual electricity cost ($36.2 million) of the educational institution for 1997, while retaining the existing standard and comfort conditions. Results of this research work will not only lead to monetary saving due to more efficient operation of the systems but also can provide useful guidance and reference for carrying out energy conservation schemes for other educational institutions.en_US
