An analysis of the FEA model in designing children's casual wear in local situationen_US
Facing the increasing competitive business environment, fashion manufacturers/retailers who want to acquire a competitive edge and stand for the competition, require to have a good knowledge of their customers and satisfy their different aspects of needs accordingly. Nowadays, parents are showing more concern for their children's growth (both physically and psychologically) and appearance. They are willing and able to pay more on their children's clothing in return for demanding higher value. There is a growing number of local apparel makers who have been adding children's wear to their expanding product lines. These phenomena reveal the growing importance of high valued children's wear market in local situation. To satisfy thoroughly the consumers' needs with the high valued right products, a FEA consumer needs model was developed by Lamb and Kallal (1992) to enhance previous views of the design process by expanding the considerations made in analysis and evaluation phases. Every design requires analysis of functional, expressive and aesthetic needs for the target consumers. The FEA model has been successfully worked for educational purpose. In order to provide an useful tool for the children's wear designers to deal with the requirements and high valued children's wear, this research aims at evaluating the effectiveness and applicability of the FEA consumer needs model in designing children's casual wear in local situation. The research has looked into the situation from two different perspectives,, that is from the industry and from the consumers' point of view. In the industrial survey, five fashion designers or professionals who are involving in the Hong Kong children's casual wear market have been invited to conduct a personal in-depth interview. In the consumer survey, by using a random stratified sampling method in systemic way, a sample size of 250 were invited to conduct a personal interview along with a questionnaire survey. By applying an qualitative analysis approach to the survey findings, it is verified that the FEA consumer needs model is applicable in the designing of children's casual wear in the local situation. In order to maximize the effectiveness of the model to its greatest extent, some supplements are recommended to the model. It is hoped by using the model, higher value added to the children's casual wear design can further improve the consumer satisfaction in local situation and consequently enhance the competitive power in current business environment.en_US
