dcterms.abstractBridges of Hong Kong are designed to the Structures Design Manual for Highways and Railways which is issued by the Highway Department, 1997. Nowadays, there is a growth of cellular bridges in Hong Kong but the design of cellular bridge deck is highly analytical and computer based. This dissertation is to propose a simplified method for the analysis of cellular bridge deck by the Semi-continuum Method. At present, there are many Commercial Programs to analyze cellular bridge decks such as Grillage Analogy, Finite Element Method and Finite Strip Method. However, these methods involve a large number of input data and equations. A lot of effort and time are required to solve a problem. The proposed simplified method of Semi-continuum with the modified computer program SECAN contains only a few simultaneous equations and can be solved using ordinary personal computer in the form of matrix. The input and output files are simple to formulate and interpret. The study is focused on the determination of longitudinal moment, shear and deflection due to live loading on cellular bridge decks. Three numbers of numerical examples are worked on the methods of SECAN, Grillage and Finite Element for comparison. Comparison with some existing work of Finite Strip Method was also carried out. The results of the proposed method, SECAN, do not deviate significantly from those methods of Grillage, Finite Element and Finite Strip. It all shows that the proposed method is workable and it has a high potential for further development as a commercial product. An existing box girder section of the West Kowloon Expressway was analyzed using the proposed method as an example.en_US
