dcterms.abstractA review from a number of national codes of practices indicates that no recommendations have been given on the flexural torsional buckling design of steel arches. In practical analysis and design of steel arches or curved beams, a structural model with straight beam elements is normally used to simulate the curved geometry. In the model, we usually adopt the elastic theory of analysis to find out the member forces and thus carry out the member design. Unlike the straight beam, arch structures carry the load through the combined axial and bending action. However, the steel arch is more susceptible to instability than the corresponding straight beam mainly because the axial compressive force destabilizes the structure. As a result, the buckling moment or the buckling stress would be smaller than the straight beam of equivalent dimensions. This dissertation is aimed at analyzing the steel arch with the developed finite element program BIF to determine the buckling load. The out-of-plane buckling is usually the lowest buckling load as the ratio of the inertia about the minor axis to the inertia about the major axis is usually small. Further, the present study generates the design curves for the estimation of failure stress for steel arches and thus enable the designer to employ the Rankine formula to determine the ultimate load factor for the complete structure.en_US
