| dcterms.abstract | The present study examined the effects of a sensory stimulation program on agitated behaviours in older people with late-stage dementia. A randomized controlled trial was adopted. 25 subjects who were at the late stage of dementia and presented agitated behaviours were recruited from a nursing home, and then randomly assigned to the intervention group and the control group. The intervention group received 18 sessions of sensory stimulation over a 6-week period whereas the control group received usual care at the nursing home. The Chinese version of Cohen Mansfield Agitation Index (CMAI-C) measured the study outcome -agitation behaviours. There were no significant baseline differences between the intervention group and the control group regarding age, gender, length of stay, use of medication, cognition, functional and agitation level. The present study showed that the effect of intervention was not significant (F (1, 23) = 2.25, p = 0.15) but a decreasing trend of agitated behaviours was observed in post-test. It suggested a small effect size (d=0.26). Although no significant effect was obtained, the present study enriches the knowledge of sensory stimulation program. The standard protocol developed for the present study encourages a wider clinical application of sensory stimulation program and allows comparisons of results across sites and studies. Future studies with a larger sample size and a more intensive program plan are suggested. | en_US |
