dcterms.abstractThe computer revolution has had little impact on reducing the amount of paper in the modern office. This has largely been due both to the delay and high costs associated with converting documents into a conventional database system and the conventional database system's inability to capture signatures or other graphic elements. A new technology is now available to solve these problems: Document Image Processing (DIP). It allows electronic replication and storage of documents and the production of laser-printed replicas including the graphic elements. DIP has been described as the trend in Information Technology. DIP technology represents a new way of doing things in business organisation. With DIP, the ways of processing documents are changed. It can break the paper barrier and the organisation efficiency can be improved. In this case, the competitive edge of the organisation can be increased. This technology has been broadly accepted in U.S and Europe. What is the development of this technology in Hong Kong? Is it widely used in Hong Kong? The main objectives of this research are to study the development of DIP and to understand the potential of DIP in Hong Kong. Moreover, the factors affecting the choice of using DIP and its application areas are discussed in this study. The result from this research potentially contributes to help IT professionals and management to understand DIP and the advantages of using DIP. It is also hoped that the factors identified in this study can help the organisations to evaluate the value of adopting DIP. This project firstly gives a detailed discussion of the background and the forces driving the evolution of this technology, and its current development. Then it will proceed to find out the degree of awareness of DIP and the factors affecting the adoption of this technology. In addition, the current usage and the benefits of DIP are discussed in this study. These are achieved by conducting a questionnaire survey to gather empirical evidence on the potential of DIP in Hong Kong, the reasons for not adopting it and the factors affecting the choice of using DIP. The questionnaires were sent to 500 IT/EDP managers from various industries. One hundred and sixty managers responded to the survey. In order to have better understanding of the extent and scope of DIP used by the companies in Hong Kong, further analysis using interviews with existing users. Based on the research findings and the interviews, it is found that it is more justified to use DIP for those organisations who have to handle a large volume of documents and require convenient and frequently retrieval of information. Besides, the result has illustrated there is a huge market for DIP in Hong Kong. Finally, practical implications of this study are discussed. Special emphasis is placed on the importance of formulating strategy on how to apply DIP in the organisation in order to enjoy the maximum benefits from it.en_US
