Business ethics among small companies in Hong Kongen_US
There has not been much empirical evidence of the business ethics orientation among small business enterprises in Hong Kong which comprise a significant portion of the commercial sector. This survey by questionnaire was carried out to ascertain whether Hong Kong small business enterprises espoused ethical principles of business in five areas: (1) company's relationship with employees, (2) company's relationship with customers, (3) company's relationship with suppliers and competitors, (4) company's policy to deal with the risk of employees' corruptive acts, and (5) company's measures to enhance corporate ethical behaviour. The results, based on self-reporting responses from 25 out of a sample of 200 companies, showed that a marginal majority of Hong Kong small businesses appeared to espouse ethical principles of business concerning the prevention of employees' corruption and the company's relationship with employees, customers, suppliers and competitors. On the other hand, it was found that there appeared to be inadequate espousal among Hong Kong small businesses of ethical principles concerning the enhancement of corporate ethical behaviour through ethical codes and ethics monitors. The study also revealed apparent weakness in the ethical orientation of Hong Kong small businesses towards certain issues of employees' right to due notice of redundancy, disclosure of product information, and respecting intellectual property rights.en_US
