Abstract: | Performance appraisal is recognized as an improtant function of human resources management in organization, be it public or private. A study has been conducted on the performance appraisal system for police constables of the Royal Hong Kong Police Force with a view to assessing its effectiveness and implications on employees' satisfaction. A total of 270 samples randomly selected from police constables, sergeants and inspectors were studied by means of questionaires. In addition, personal interviews were conducted with senior staff of Personnel Wing, Police Headquarters and other senior police officers who are regularly involved in the performance appraisal of constables. From the results of the research, it appears that the present performance appraisal system is generally accepted as effective. A number of strengths as well as weaknesses, however, were identified in the study. Recommendations to improve the present system have been made on the areas where weaknesses have been noted. |
