A study of the effectiveness of architectural features of buildings as noise barriersen_US
Population of Hong Kong increased rapidly and more and more highways are built in the urban city. Examples are East Kowloon Express and East District Express. These highways are necessary and important as linkages between urban and outer cities such as Tuen Mun, Yuen Long, Tai Po, Shatin, etc. or as express roads to places inside inner city. The fast speed highway creates serious noise impact to the buildings nearby, especially for residential buildings. The noise barrier such as enclosure of highway, high wall/fence between highway and building, and etc. have been commonly used by road designer nowadays. However, an alternative approach is to design buildings that are self-protecting from traffic noise. The engineer can give opinion to architect for use of features on facade of building to reduce the traffic noise impact. For example, the feature such as balcony is an effective mean to reduce traffic noise entering indoor. This has been a common design of many old buildings aged over 30 year old for leisure area and enjoying nature ventilation. In this dissertation, the RAYNOISE of computer aided acoustic design software is used to investigate the performance of different architectural features as noise barrier in attenuation. A model of building of 10 storey with different features has been taken for examination with different distance and various orientation of highways to the buildings. The results are useful and can be used as a guideline for engineers and architects for future facade design.en_US
