In today's increasingly competitive and quality concerning international markets, there is a need for organizations to move up the market to upgrade the quality of their products and services. Quality becomes a competitive necessity in today's global marketplace. It involves a total commitment to satisfying customers' requirements. International standards are increasingly used to reflect the needs of customers in different markets worldwide. Standards issued by the international standards body, International Standards Organization (ISO) covers most technologies and market sectors. The ISO 9000 series sets out an internationally accepted approach to quality management systems, which will ensure consistent production or supply of services to meet customer requirements. The standards are relevant to all sectors and types of organization. As shipping is an information-intensive industry and is greatly involved in the provision of efficient and effective services the need for quality assurance is required to be achieved in response to the demands of their major customers. This report looks at the application of ISO 9000 in the shipping industry in Hong Kong. It provides background to the development of quality system in the industry and other factors that influence the drive to improve quality standards within the industry. The results are based on a questionnaire survey of a random sample of both certified and non-certified to ISO 9000 shipping companies in Hong Kong. It reviews both the benefits that ISO 9000 can bring to organizations and the views of those critical of the standards. An initial quality management system is also proposed to be setup with the current Information Systems for achieving the ISO certification and assess the feasibility of applying quality management system in a non-certified of ISO 9000 shipping company. Interview approach will then be used for collecting information for analysis.en_US
