| dcterms.abstract | 'Use of English', the Advanced Supplementary Level subject in the revised Sixth Form Curriculum aims at preparing Form 7 matriculants for adult life and/or further education. However, due to the constant emphasis of testing students' English proficiency for future employment, the validity of the syllabus for Use of English (UE) is put to test in this research. The data collected were from Form 7 matriculants in 1994. Most of them were then currently employed in the commercial sector. Interviews with employers and case studies on sample subjects on their tasks encountered in the workplace were also carried out to gain a more panoramic view of the latest language demand in the workplace for Form 7 leavers. Comparisons between tasks in the UE syllabus and authentic ones as well as the subjects' remarks on the helpfulness of UE in their workplace show that there is a widening gap between the syllabus and the real demand. The study ends with some recommendations on bridging this gap. | en_US |
