Abstract: | Tube-in-tube system is one of the most common structural system for high-rise buildings. The stiffness of an exterior hollow tube is very much improved by amalgamating the exterior core which responds as a unit to take lateral forces. However, there are not many references which discuss the shear lag behaviour of a tube-in-tube structure. One of the references is by F.R. Khan [4] who had carried out a simplified analytical method in studying the shear lag effect of a frame tube structure. This dissertation aims at analyzing the shear lag behaviour of a tube-in-tube structure on different structural configurations, spandrel beam sizes, and inner core sizes by using a more precise 3-dimensional finite element package. The results show that shear lag effect will be minimized with (i) aspect ratio equals to one; (ii) high stiffness spandrel beams and floor beams and (iii) enlargement of corner columns sizes. Further, the present study generates the design charts for the estimation of structural members sizes in the preliminary design stage. In addition to the above, the dynamic characteristic of the building is also studied. The first 6 modes of the tube-in-tube structure are computed and its vibration shapes are also depicted in Appendix A. Suggestions in improving the structure against vibration are also given. |
