dcterms.abstractThis report aims at identifying the management skills for IT professionals in Hong Kong from practitioners' point of view. The fulfillment and perceived importance to existing job was studied. The expectation on skill requirement for management and executive levels was explored. Implications of the results were discussed for career development and education. After the study it was found that IT professionals in Hong Kong foresee an increasing demand on management skills in their career development and they also recognize the need for improvement. In addition, several observations were found: (1) people management skills are widely considered less important to business skills; (2) misalignment on actual need and expectation exists between supervisors and subordinates; (3) management skills are developed progressively without radical changes in scope along the career path, and; (4) different client nature contributes difference in skill expectations. Recommendations to IT practitioners, academic institutions and agencies on educations and career development were made.en_US
