| dcterms.abstract | The severe criticism given by President Jiang Zemin to the Hong Kong media motivates the study of the discourses carried out between Jiang and his intereactants in two separate communicative occasions: one with the Hong Kong media, to whom negative comments are given, and the other with Mike Wallace, who receives high praise in contrast. The conversational analysis method is used in analyzing the differences between the two events by focusing on strategies in question-and-answer and face-work of the participants. Efforts have been made to find out the reasons why President Jiang behaved differently and gave distinctly different comments on the two occasions. The harsh 'naive' and 'simple' remarks directed at the Hong Kong media came as a distinct contrast to the friendly and co-operative communication style in the Wallace's interview. It is concluded that there are a number of factors that are at work. These factors are : a) communication mode; b) power distance relationship; c) diverse purposes and expectations of the communicative events; d) the nature of the response. | en_US |
