Abstract: This dissertation aims at enhancing the role of Hong Kong as an international control centre to provide efficient service to its overseas buyers and its global production bases. It is hoped that the recommendations given in this dissertation may serve as reference guides to other companies. This project focus on the following aspects with regard to value added service in product development for a globalised manufacturer. The development and current situation of the Hong Kong Clothing Industry with respect to its competitiveness and weakness. The current communication practice and workflow with overseas buyers during the product development stage are investigated. A company was selected as a case for in-depth investigation. Based on the findings, recommendations on improving current workflow process have been made. The various technical specifications for remote communication with overseas production bases of the selected company are examined with respect to its effectiveness. Systematic procedures for communication with overseas production bases are suggested. In addition, the various communication tools to facilitate such information transfer and their applications are examined.
