Abstract: This project offers a study of the market position of a cargo carrier (Cargolux Airlines) in the airfreight industry, and discussion is being made whether the cargo carrier is feasible or necessary for becoming a freight integrator under the perspectives of strategic management and supply chain management. An introduction in Chapter 1 mentions the importance of airfreight industry followed by the purpose, the limitations and research methodology of this project. Followed by the detailed company analysis of Cargolux Airlines in Chapter 2, the functions, logistics roles and responsibilities of different parties, including shipper, airfreight forwarder, carrier/airline, and freight integrator, in the airfreight industry are identified in Chapter 3 which can provide the readers the understanding of the interrelationship of different logistics parties and the market position of Cargolux Airlines. The study proceeds in Chapter 4 with the competitive advantages of freight integrators by taking DHL and UPS as examples by analyzing their services provided in the market. Alter looking into the competitive market position of freight integrator, Chapter 5 analyses the competitive positioning of Cargolux Airlines by using the Michael Porter's five forces approach in order to reflect the advantages, disadvantages and/or needs for Cargolux to become a freight integrator. Chapter 6 investigates the existing corporate strategies of Cargolux as well as possible strategic move of the company. The project concludes in Chapter 7 with summary of benefits and costs for Cargolux Airlines to become a freight integrator along with the considerations.
