dc.title | The effect of therapeutic ultrasound and panax notoginseng coupling for treating Achilles tendinosis : a rat model | en_US |
dcterms.abstract | The study aimed to investigate the effect of therapeutic ultrasound (US) with Panax notoginseng (PNS) coupling on the biomechanical properties of Achilles tendinosis in rat after 4 weeks of eccentric treadmill exercise. 18 Mature male Sprague-Dawley rats were trained with eccentric overuse protocol and extra 5 mature male Sprague- Dawley rats were under normal cage activity as the control for the eccentric overuse protocol. The 18 rats were divided into three groups, (1) eccentric exercise with pulsed US, 20% duty cycle, 1 MHz, 1.5W/cm2 for 4 minutes with PNS coupling (n=6), (2) eccentric exercise with sham US with PNS coupling (n=7) and (3) control with eccentric exercise (n=5). After every exercise training, the groups received the respective treatment. After 4 weeks of training, all the rats were sacrificed and the TAs were harvested for biomechanical testing for load-relaxation, stiffness and ultimate tensile strength (UTS). Results of one way ANOVA revealed no statistical significant difference in UTS and stiffness in the body weight normalized data over right TA (p=0.388, p=0.555) respectively. For load relaxation properties, there was statistical significant difference over right TA (p<0.001). Post hoc tests revealed significant difference between control group and the three exercise groups, but there were no significant differences among the three exercise groups. This study demonstrated that adding about one tenth of body weight to the rats in the eccentric treadmill exercise in 10o decline, speed 17 m/min to 20 m/min for 4 weeks could not induce changes in UTS and stiffness in TA in rat model. However, a significant decrease in load relaxation properties could be induced after the exercise protocol. There was no effect of the therapeutic US with pulsed mode, 20% duty cycle, 1 MHz, 1.5W/cm2 with PNS coupling for 4 minutes in improving the deteriorated load relaxation properties. A further study on animal tendinosis model and the therapeutic effect of phonophoresis with PNS is indicated. | en_US |
