dcterms.abstractThe Internet has been becoming a highly efficient electronic marketplace for goods and services. However, the Internet is such an insecure media that is susceptible to attacks of eavesdroppers. Also there must be some ways to prevent fraudulent merchants and customers. In this report three existing payment systems popularly used among the Internet, namely, credit cards, E-cash and First Virtual, are examined. Their threats and weaknesses are pointed out. Then the paradigm of a fully authenticated and encrypted Internet payment system named as Digital, Valued-stored Tickets (DVST) payment system is proposed. It shows how convenient it is to use the system for Internet shopping. The basic principles of cryptography behinds the scheme, including secret-key encryption, public-key encryption, RSA, one-way hash, digital signatures and public key certificates are introduced. These cryptographic principles are applied to the validation and eavesdropper-proofing mechanisms such as entity authentication and encrypted exchange channel. The importance issue of double spending prevention is investigated and various methods are proposed. Two different approaches in implementation of the system, namely, reusable and one-time DVST are described. Finally we show how the DVST system solves the threats and weaknesses of the three popular systems described.en_US
