Abstract: Hong Kong is an area of low to moderate seismicity. The Hong Kong building code has no provision of seismic resistance for building structure. When the lower storey of high-rise buildings are used for parking, shops, restaurants or lobby space, designer is prohibited from continuing some structural walls or frames down to the foundation resulting in a vertical structural irregularity in seismic design. As dictated by architectural requirement in planning the structural configuration of a building, shear walls supported on reinforced concrete frames through a deep transfer girder is a widely used practice in Hong Kong. The seismic design consideration on this type of structure is investigated with reference to these recommendations mentioned in the New Zealand code and Chinese code. Computation results obtained in the present study and specified detailing with seismic provisions are compared to those based on local design code. The main conclusion of this study is that even with a low probability of seismic hazard in Hong Kong and wind load generally more critical than seismic load for high-rise buildings, there is still a need to consider seismic load for this type of structure because of the high consequence of the failure of transfer girder structure under earthquake action. After studying the seismic detailing requirement specified in relevant design codes, some modifications on the detailing on transfer girder and supported column under earthquake load are recommended.
