dc.title | On the integration of symmetry and template metrics to the active contour model and its fast implementation | en_US |
dcterms.abstract | Active contour model or snake has been developed for delineating objects based on three types of energies: internal, external and image energies. In this research, we extend this model to include two more energy terms. One is the symmetry energy, which is computed based on the symmetry property of the underlying target object while the other is the template energy, which is based on a prior knowledge of the shape of the target object. Explicitly, the symmetry energy is calculated based on the symmetry distance while the template energy is based on the distances between a set of sampled points on the snake and the corresponding points on the boundary of the specified template. In effect, symmetry energy bends the active contour to a symmetric shape while template energy restricts the movement of the contour around a user-specified template. Owing to the high computation complexity of this extension of the model, it is difficult to make the snake move in real time. To remedy this, instead of calculating the energy terms in a straightforward way, we derive substitutes, which involve only simple calculations. Experiments are performed to reveal the effect and performance of our method. | en_US |
