Abstract: The three-dimensional (3D) Automatic Deformation Monitoring System (ADMS) are used to monitor the movement of the Tsuen Wan Bypass viaduct during the construction of the Tsuen Wan West Station of the West Rail Project in Hong Kong. The ADMS consists of three Cyclic Optical Surveyors (CYCLOPS) positioned at three different places to have complete coverage of the bridge structure of Tsuen Wan Bypass (TWBP). The CYCLOPS consists of motorized total station (MTS) and prismatic targets and it is using the ground survey method of collecting the movement data of the bridge. There are over two hundred prismatic targets installed on the piers and the soffit of the deck for recording the precise dynamic movement of the structure. As to safety measure the TWBP, baseline readings were recorded before the construction works and continuous readings for the dynamic movement are recorded during the construction works. The KCRC Engineer has predicted that during the construction of the proposed TWWS may affect the stability of the TWBP viaduct structure. The Engineer has proposed the action value (AV) for thresholding the movement of the structures and ground. In the event that any of the AV is reached the Contractor shall implement the mitigation measures and the emergency Plan of Action. This response should act promptly to the structures especially the TWBP. The deformation monitoring data is supposed to be handled by the KCRC Geotechnical Instrumentation Monitoring System (GIMS) that composed of Arcview GIS software and database management system. Unfortunately, the original design of the GIMS is for handling one-dimensional (1D) data and it does not fit for the three-dimensional (3D) deformation monitoring data. Moreover, the measuring data by the MTS need conversion program to convert to displacement readings that can be manipulated by the database management system. This dissertation has a research of the 3D ADMS applied to the deformation monitoring of the bridge in the heavy civil construction project and the GIS application for data storage, data retrieval, data processing, information management, and spatial analysis of the deformation monitoring data. Moreover, simulated deformation data were used to test the program of the conceptual system and to evaluate the flexibility of the system to be implemented on the coming civil construction projects.
