dcterms.abstractThe interaction of sprinkler spray with smoke extraction system gives many problems to fire engineers. There is so far no engineering solutions nor regulations worked out through detailed studies. In this project, such problem will be investigated. The sprinkler response was studied first based on some empirical equations on ceiling jet. Design of smoke extraction system associated was analyzed by following some design manuals, Experiments were carried out in the atrium at the University of Science and Technology of China to better understand the interaction between the two systems. By combining theoretical analysis with experimental results, sprinkler water spray with higher discharge density would give greater dragging effect on the fire plume and smoke layer. Earlier discharge of water spray would give better control on temperature rise with the smoke flow not so turbulent. The simplest solution to this problem is to design sprinkler heads with lower response time index, install deeper smoke curtain and place the vents at proper locations.en_US
