Abstract: In Hong Kong, investment has received more and more attention in this decade. Many people participate in investment in many different ways. Among the various ways of investment, security trading is definitely one of the most popular one. Many of the people participating in the security market are part-time investors. For these part-time traders, one of their most frequently used trading approaches is to follow the trading advice of local newspapers and magazines. For some of them, it is because they do not have the time and skills to understand the financial data. They rather follow other people's suggestions. Yet, for a number of these part-time traders, they actually got the ability to learn and use simple financial analysis skills. They do realize that security trading is a very complicated subject. To make a trading decision, they need an objective analysis of the market data and a subjective evaluation of their own financial goals and risk tolerance level. They cannot perform their own analysis due to the lack of a suitable tool. There are many financial trading systems in the market. Some of them are very powerful and very easy to use. However they are not suitable for normal part-time investors because they are usually expensive and not readily available. Part-time investors unlike full-time traders, they need an affordable and easily accessible tool so that they can do the analysis anytime, anywhere whenever they are free. The goal of this dissertation is to develop a web-based stock data analysis tool for part-time investors. The tool has two major contributions. Firstly, it aims to provide an affordable and readily available analysis service to those part-time investors who have the ability to do simple manipulation of financial data but does not got the right tool to do so. With this tool, they can manipulate the financial data anytime, anywhere with an online access to the Internet. Secondly, besides serving as a data manipulation tool, this tool can also provide trading suggestions to investors. It is able to analyse the performance of a stock based on a predefined set of expert advice. The expert advice is a consolidated experience of the security trading experts through their detailed analysis of the historical security data. The tool will not tell users whether to buy or sell a stock. Instead, it will tell the users something like whether the stock is likely to be in an upward trend or a downward trend, whether the stock price will move steadily or highly fluctuated. Investors can then use these suggestions as reference and make their trading decision accordingly.
