A knowledge base system for cargo container managementen_US
Containerised shipping is a service industry which provides a maritime transportation service moving cargoes from one country to another by using cargo containers. Thus, in order to support the services, the container shipping lines should ensure supply sufficient empty cargo containers to their customers (i.e. shippers) to stuff their cargoes, otherwise the customers would switch to their competitors. Therefore, this project is to develop a supporting prototype, in which all possible internal and external constraints are considered, to assist the Operation Department's staff to plan the empty cargo container supply before the crisis is happened, help them to catering customer requirement more efficiently, and select an appropriate solution more economically with fulfilling the following basic three criterion, which are empty cargo container demand, timing and cost control, rather than depending on their personal experience and manual calculation based on the extracted data from the present equipment control system to obtain a possible solution more than one day. A knowledge base software - KAPPA PC has been used to develop a prototype namely "Cargo Container Management System", to assist the operation staff to use in the practical aspect. From the results of prototype evaluations, it is indicated that the users and MIS department staff agreed the prototype could fulfil the user' requirement, improve their efficiency for their daily operation and enhance their job satisfaction. The prototype is easy understand and control, its response speed is satisfactory, its interface could give a direct, quick and accurate result, in turn, this could provide better training to those novices. However, most of users felt that too many information should be input to the prototype manually. Also, due to time limitation, not all parameters are considered, and limited functions could be applied in the system, the degree of the knowledge could not be investigated deep enough, and only simple interfaces are developed. Therefore, improvements should be carried out for the above drawbacks, and further study is recommended to establish a complete system to link with this supporting prototype the present container control (database) system in our company, so that the data could be direct downloaded to the prototype instead of input manually. Apart from the above disadvantages, this prototype is successfully developed for the users' need, in turn, it could enhance customer service quality in our company, maintain the market share, improve container utilisation and better control the expenses in cargo containers.en_US
