The adaptation of the St. George's Respiratory Questionnaire for local clients with COPDen_US
The St. Georges's Respiratory Questionnaire (SGRQ) was designed to measure quality of life (QOL) in patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). This self-administered questionnaire was developed by Jones et al (1992) covering three domains of health in airways disease patients: Symptoms, Activity and Impacts, and a Total score. Its reliability, validity and sensitivity have been demonstrated. The aim of the present study was to develop a Chinese version of the SGRQ (SGRQ-HK) and to confirm its clinical properties. For the adaptation process, the forward and back-translation method by bilinguals was used, together with professional committee and lay panel. The psychometric and clinical evaluation included 54 patients with COPD (31 males with mean age 71.22 +- 5.95 : 23 females with mean age 68.8 +- 8.64). Supplementary QOL questionnaire, clinical and physiological data were also collected. The SGRQ-HK was acceptable and easy to understand. The results confirmed expected levels of associations. Correlation coefficients between the "Symptoms" and the dyspneic score using Borg scale was 0.666, "Activity" and the six-minute walk test was -0.776, "Impacts" and the "Mental health" of SF-36 was -0.615 and the "Total" and the "General health" of SF-36 was -0.874. The reliability of the SGRQ-HK was good with the Cronbach's alpha coefficients were exceeded 0.8 for the whale questionnaire and its subdimensions. Both short-term and long-term test-retest reliabilities were good with the ICCs of all the dimensions exceeding 0.7. The original three-factor structure of the SGRQ was confirmed. In conclusion, the SGRQ-HK is reliable, valid and compares well with the corresponding tests of the original version.en_US
