Abstract: This research study is aimed at reviewing the technological framework and methodologies for the development and application of Intranet systems in the rental service industry to improve the overall performance of an organization. The study focuses on the technologies required for the development of a distributed video rental system (DVRS) using a local firm- Cheapy Laser & Video Express as an example. I have also built a prototype for the in the study using Java language, HTML, J++ Programming tools. The prototype shows the various functions such as browsing, data search, data updating etc. of DVRS. The system can also be used to perform analysis to forecast future demand. The study has analyzed the major factors such as hardware, software, data, and communication for determining the physical design. The study has provided a conceptual model to demonstrate the inter-relationship of various factors affecting the development of the DVRS. These include external constraints such as legal environment and market competition, internal corporate factors such as financial constraint, operation and structural constraints as well as the four major factors mentioned above.
