dc.title | Application of partial discharge monitoring to high voltage rotating machines | en_US |
dcterms.abstract | In this dissertation, the application of on-line and off-line computerized partial discharge (PD) monitoring on 6.6kV motors in a power station is studied and evaluated. The on-line PD measurement by turbine generator analyzer (TGA) is compared with the off-line conventional PD measurement (Haefely TE571). The parameters of partial discharge on motor insulation are used to evaluate the effectiveness of motor overhaul as well as the insulation condition, After reviewing the on-line partial discharge data, statistical analysis is used to develop the regression line of the PD parameter against the running hours and number of start/stops. The regression line and the standard deviation for two major groups of motors are developed as a basis for the prediction of insulation failure in high voltage motors and to identify the motors that are apparently having problems. By analyzing the unusual PD parameters and patterns, the possible insulation failure mechanism can be identified and appropriate measures can be taken to prevent catastrophic failure of the motor. The main source of data was obtained from the author's working experience in the routine on-line PD measurement on 6.6kV motors that have been retrofitted with bus couplers at the motor terminals. The off-line PD measurement data was obtained from the twenty-one 6.6kV motors in the 1998 year-end overhaul. The statistical analysis was calculated by using Microsoft Excel 97. The regression line for each group of motors was developed step by step by selecting the PD parameters with the best correlation with the running hours and number of start/stops for prediction. Typical case studies and PD measurement results are included in the dissertation for illustrating the capability of the PD monitoring on the unusual PD activities and motors that are apparently having problems. The result of the PD measurement and the statistical analysis is discussed in Chapter 5. Further works that can be carried on with the dissertation in future is also discussed in Chapter 6. | en_US |
