Abstract: This dissertation explores a new trend in publication that replaces printed product catalogues. With the combination of interactive multimedia technology and optical publishing, we can create an interactive product catalogue. Interactive product catalogue can provide a great deal of benefits over the traditional printed product catalogue. It increases the speed and accuracy of information searching; reduces the size of the storage requirement; reduces the production cost and the delivery cost; increases the ease of distribution and handling; simplifies the presentation of complicated idea; and allows direct access to the information. In this dissertation, we describe how the interactive multimedia can provide advantages in publishing. A consistence and easy to use user interface is very important in interactive application. We discuss how interactive tools can make benefit in the application of product catalogue. We suggest some interactive tools that provide consistent user interface. They allow readers to customize the content of the catalogue which increase the readability of the catalogue and make the static data in the CD-ROM become dynamic. Although the technology is available, the application of technology is still far from fully mature. We have developed a prototype system to explore the feasibility of interactive multimedia and optical publication development. We have also implemented a set of interactive tools to demonstrate the benefits of interactive product catalogue.
