The health attitudes and health seeking behaviours of mothers of asthmatic children in Hong Kongen_US
Asthma is the commonest chronic illness affecting children in Hong Kong. As the health of the asthmatic children are in part determined by the health attitudes and health seeking behaviours of their mothers, the researcher conducted a study to explore the related issue. The study was a non-experimental study with an exploratory and quantitative approach. Survey by means of questionnaire was used to collect descriptive data from 200 mothers of asthmatic children at 2 community hospitals in Hong Kong. The questionnaire consisted of 72 items asking about the maternal attitudes towards their children's asthma and their health seeking behaviours for the health of their children. The results indicated that the maternal attitude was not so positive towards their children's asthma. The mothers were rather stigmatized and pessimistic about the disease. OPD, A&E and GP were commonly used by the mothers during asthmatic attacks of their children. Their medical compliance was satisfactory, but they did not adhere to the health advice to bring along with the broncho-dilator inhalers. Many mothers sought non-orthodox management. Relating factors were explored and results suggested 4 variables, perceived severity of asthma, duration of having asthma, perceived accuracy of diagnosis and perceived effectiveness of medical treatment, having association with the maternal attitudes and their health seeking behaviours for the health of their asthmatic children.en_US
