dcterms.abstractThis paper sets out to investigate two groups of Secondary 6 English as a Second Language Hong Kong learners' production of several specific types of final consonant clusters of English regular verb past-tense markers 'ed' or 'd'. Cantonese has no final consonant clusters and its final consonants /p/, /t/, /k/, /m/, /n/, /g/ are limited in number and variety as compared with English final consonants and final consonant clusters. It is then highly likely that Cantonese L1 learners of English encounter great difficulties in learning English as English has a much wider range of final consonants and final consonant clusters. Their production of English final consonant clusters tends to contain various degrees of Cantonese L1 interference. The pilot study and the main study record and show the various strategies used by the subjects when producing the relevant final consonant cluster sounds. The studies also identify some common patterns or formation of interlanguage rules, such as epenthesis and glottalization, in the process of their interlanguage development.en_US
