Abstract: The purpose of this research project is to examine the objectives and the formulation process of a contingency plan which, if in place, would enable the business of an organization to be continued in an orderly manner notwithstanding in an event of a disaster. Every successful contingency plan must be formulated through a systematic formulation process which involves eight major steps: obtaining senior management commitment, assess possible risk and estimate potential losses, identify critical factors and functions, determine minimum resources required, establish alternative operation plan, develop the detailed contingency plan, test and maintain the plan. In order to make the project a more comprehensive and practical one, the project is divided into two parts. Part I aims at providing the readers with some basic general concepts of contingency planning as well as the detailed formulation process of a contingency plan. Part II intends to examine the operational functions of the Controllership Division of the ABC Bank Limited and to recommend to the senior management if a Service Delivery Contingency Plan for the Division should be formulated to support with the Bank's strategy and to comply with the legal requirements. Drawing from the survey findings, some of the operational functions of the Controllership Division are critical to the continued survival of the business of the Bank. A detailed Service Delivery Contingency Plan for the Division has been formulated and tested, and is recommended to the senior management for implementation. To cope with the future development of the Bank, further enhancements to the Service Delivery Contingency Plan are recommended in the near future for: backup of critical spreadsheet files through electronic mail system and selection of another back-up site with short distance from XXX Bank Building and the EDP Division. These enhancements can be made upon the installation of the electronic mail system in second quarter of 1994 and the commencement of business of the new Queen's Road East Branch sometime in fourth quarter of 1994.
