| dcterms.abstract | The elderly population, defined as 60 years old and over is expected to increase from 14.3% of the territories population in 1996 to 16 % of the territories population in 2007. The Hong Kong Government has committed to provide adequate supply of housing for the elderly with suitable facilities at affordable price to meet the current and future demands. The dissertation identify the facilities provision in public housing for the elderly in Hong Kong and to investigate the usefulness of facilities to the elderly, utilisation rates of these facilities and the possible reasons for such utilisation rates etc. The Design Manual: Barrier Free Access - 1997 has been set as the demarcation line for the research. A public housing estate for elderly at Hung Hom has been selected for the case study. 29 respondents, representing 10 % of the elderly population of the selected estate have been surveyed personally with questionnaires. Data collected have been critically analysed with reference to the type of disabilities the respondents have, usefulness of the facilities to different types of disability and utilisation rates of the facilities in the estate and the possible reasons for such rates. Upon literature review and analysing the data collected it reveled that facilities provided in public housing for the elderly are governed by the current Ordinances, Regulations, Code of Practice and Hong Kong Housing Authority internal instructions relevant to the development. The utilisation rates of some facilities are low and some of the elderly people have never used the facilities since they have moved in the estate and some facilities are particularly useful to elderly with a particular type of disability. | en_US |
