dcterms.abstractMost of the air-conditioning systems, if not all, in commercial buildings are intermittently operated in practice. However, the Transfer Function Method (TFM) recommended by ASHRAE Handbook is based on the continuous operation of a constant space air temperature, which can only be applied under continuous air-conditioning operation. The Space Air Temperature Function method (SATF) cannot provide a proper peak cooling load in intermittent operation. This dissertation reports a new method developed based on the TFM method. The new method can utilize the available design data given in ASHRAE Fundamentals to estimate the peak cooling load. After processing a large number of case studies, the results from the new method are compared with those from the SATF method under different parameters, and then verified by the Revised Radiant Time Series method (Revised RTS). The study shows that the new method can be applied to calculate the design cooling loads in intermittent air-conditioning operation, and can provide reasonably accurate intermittent design cooling loads.en_US
