Health related behaviour survey of students via university Web siteen_US
In the study, 'the Hong Kong Health Related Behavior Instrument' is applied to assess the health related behavior of a convenience sample (n=279) taken from the students of the Hong Kong Polytechnic University. The convenience sample was, in actual, respondents of a web page survey launched under the Hong Kong Polytechnic University's web site and it was kept online for a period of four months. In addition to the survey, the web page displayed an introduction to the research study with a pledge of anonymity to invite students to make truthful responses to the questions designed for this research. The setting up of the computer program for the web survey was the most difficult part in the research process. The investigator (myself), in collaboration with an experienced computer programmer, created the web page survey, written in computer languages (Hyper-text Markup Language HTML, JavaScript and Perl) and placed in the Unix cluster of the University's main web server so that all students of the University could gain the access to the survey. Once the electronic questionnaire was completed, it generated an American Standard Code for Information Inter-exchange (ASCII) text file to collect answers from the questionnaire to be converted into Statistical Package for the Social Science (SPSS) data file. All the collected SPSS data was downloaded to the investigator's work station. The ease of data collection and data organization was impressive; the investigator simply had to telnet to the University Unix cluster to access and retrieve all collected data of which were actual descriptive findings of the survey. Excessive Westernized fast food eating habit, inadequate dairy product intake, physical inactivity, rise in alcohol consumption, inadequate social support, and the recent sweeping social advocacy of ever slimming one's figure have been some of the many recognized areas of drawbacks to a healthy lifestyle. Results from this research project are descriptive findings of the respondents experiencing one or more of the above mentioned drawbacks in their daily lifestyles. If these respondents would like to pursuit a healthier life, they needed to modify their lifestyles particularly in those areas. These descriptive findings provide the readers a general overview of lifestyles of the surveyed samples from the University students, and they point towards the need for health promotion in certain areas. With the help of Web survey, it is becoming increasingly easier to conduct health services research to identify problems and bring upon corresponding remedial measures.en_US
