Abstract: With increased availability and affordability of computer resources, the benefits of computerization are becoming accessible to more areas of the plant and factory. One of such applications is artificial vision system which can automatically inspect and determine the brake pad conditions of a moving train passing over the Train Washing Plant. The new system, named PadVIEW, can calculate the wear rate and the remaining life of each brake pad without holding the train at the maintenance pit. It can also provide information for the maintenance engineer to decide on the maintenance approach for the braking system. Although this new system cannot actually improve the performance (wear rate) of the brake pad, it does act as a tool and provide more information regarding the individual brake pad wearing performance for the maintenance staff to improve their traditional maintenance practice. However, in order to achieve the best result from PadVIEW, it is necessary to further consider some other environmental factors such as the Depot facility, manpower allocation, etc. In accordance with the actual brake pad wear rate recorded with PadVIEW system, the maintenance engineer can evaluate the potential benefits of the possible maintenance approaches and select the optimum one which can best match with the environmental constrains for the maintenance of the brake system. For the case of the PadVIEW system installed in KCRC Ho Tung Lau Rolling Stock Maintenance Depot, it is more cost-effective to extend the maintenance interval from existing 9,000 km to 22,000 km rather than simply replace the manual inspection or separate the brake pad inspection from normal maintenance, which can result in a cost saving of HK$ 4,028,000 per year and the investment of the PadVIEW can be returned in less than 1.25 year.
