dcterms.abstract | In this dissertation, an expert system is developed for power system application in the area of alarm handling in a major distribution substation. This expert system is designed as a tool for assisting a field engineer for handling alarms at a major distribution substation. In addition, this expert system can also be served as training aim for young engineers or graduate trainees by simulation of various fault conditions. Because of the capability of supporting both object representation and production rules and various searching strategies, Kappa-PC is chosen as the expert system shell for development of the system. The expert system is designed to run on any 80486 person computer with a windows platform, which means that the expert system can be run on almost any personal computer. The main source of knowledge base is extracted from the author's working experience in the two power utilities as an engineer for over ten years. Other sources of knowledge base are obtained through discussion with control engineers and field engineers. Of course, references are made to various schematic diagrams of the protection and alarm systems in a typical major distribution substation in Hong Kong. The expert system was developed step by step. Initially a prototype was developed with only a few production rules for familiarization of the expert system shell and as an initial trail. After success in building a prototype system, more production rules were incorporated into the expert system programme. Of course, more than just adding new rules, more new objects, classes, subclasses, instances and functions were introduced to the programme so that the whole system could be operated properly with the new production rules. The final expert system programme contains more than 200 rules. After building up a complete system, the system was validated by simulation to confirm it can give correct conclusions and provide expert suggestions under various fault conditions. Typical cases study are included in the dissertation for illustrating the capability of the expert system. This dissertation is concluded in the last chapter. Further works which can be carried on with the dissertation in future was also discussed. | en_US |
