| dcterms.abstract | Background Hong Kong is having high risk of infectious disease outbreak. Proper hand hygiene is effective in prevention of cross-infection. However, as shown in many studies, hand hygiene compliance of healthcare workers was poor in overseas as well as in Hong Kong. Therefore, it is urgent to improve hand hygiene adherence of healthcare workers, especially nurses, in Hong Kong. Before launching a hand hygiene promotional activity, an assessment should be done and the factors affecting the intention to perform hand hygiene behavior should be identified. Aim The purpose of this study is to identify the factors that affect the intention of performing hand hygiene practice among nurses in Hong Kong. Based on the findings of this study, tailor-made hand hygiene promotional interventions can be carried out. Thus, hand hygiene performance among nurses in Hong Kong can be improved effectively through the interventions. Method The theory of planned behavior was used as a theoretical framework in this study. A self-administered questionnaire was developed with an elicitation study performed. Data was collected from the nurses working in the study hospital through the questionnaire. Finally, 298 questionnaires were received with response rate of 32.9 percent. Result Consistent with the theory of planned behavior, a strong and direct relationship between attitude and intention towards the behavior of performing hand hygiene practice was found among nurses. At the same time, correlations between the three predictor variables (attitude towards the behavior, subjective norm and perceived behavioral control) were noted. However, no direct relationship was found between subjective norm or perceived behavioral control and intention. The motivating factors and barriers of hand hygiene practice performance were also identified. Conclusion Based on the findings of this study, the factors affecting the intention to perform the hand hygiene practice among nurses in the study hospital were identified. Hopefully, the results of the study could be useful in planning effective hand hygiene promotional activities in the hospital soon. | en_US |
