Investigation of fingerprint analysis algorithmsen_US
Fingerprints have been used as unique identifiers of individuals for a long time. It has long been accepted as a positive identification in courts for law enforcement applications. A traditional fingerprint database consists of rooms of cabinets jammed with millions of cards. Wading through this maze is a daunting task even for the fingerprint professionals. With the recent advent of the computer technology and algorithm development, automatic fingerprint identification is gaining wide acceptance in many types of applications that require biometrics identification. Fingerprint is a complex image consists of oriented ridges with irregular breaks and forks. Whether a fingerprint is captured on paper or inkless scanner, it does not manifest itself identically every time. There are always differences among different fingerprint images of the same finger and positively identifying them is a challenge. This paper presents a methodology for the analysis of algorithms for automatic fingerprint identification. A graphic user interface is provided and each algorithm is represented as an icon. By freely combining these algorithm icons, the immediate images and the overall result of the fingerprint processing can be visualised in real-time. The flexibility provided by the methodology enables fast algorithm investigation and development.en_US
